PhD Programme

The PhD Programme of the Department of Physics has been operating since the late 1980s, modeled after similar programmes abroad. Specifically, a two-semester cycle of postgraduate courses and written Entrance Examinations had been established. In the 1990s, the Program was modified to be connected to and serve as a continuation of the respective Master’s Programs. After the implementation of the new law 4485/2017, the program operates based on the PhD Studies Regulations of the Department (Government Gazette 832/B/2018).

Announcement for the admission of PhD candidates

PhD Titles

The PhD Programme awards a doctoral degree with the option of specialization in: (a) Physics, (b) Atmospheric Sciences and Environmental Physics, and (c) Electronic Technologies.

The Department of Physics of the School of Sciences at the University of Ioannina may announce PhD candidate positions twice a year, specifically before the start of the fall and spring teaching semesters. The announcement outlines the research fields in which the opportunity to undertake a PhD thesis is offered, as well as the faculty members who have proposed them. The announcement, in both Greek and English, is required to be posted on the websites of the Department and the University.

Participation Requirements

Those eligible to apply for a PhD are holders of a Postgraduate Diploma (Master’s degree) in Physics or a related field from domestic institutions or from recognized foreign institutions (as deemed equivalent by DOATAP, according to Law 3328/2005 (A’ 80)). Candidates may submit their application on dates specified by the corresponding announcements of the Department. The required supporting documents that must accompany the application and the selection process are outlined in Article 38 of Law 4485/2017 (Government Gazette 114 A’). In special cases, a candidate who does not hold a Master’s degree may also be accepted as a PhD candidate. These cases only apply to postgraduate students who are enrolled in one of the Master’s Programs, have successfully completed their course cycle within the prescribed time, and have demonstrated excellent academic performance. Their application is submitted during the same period specified in the Department’s current announcement, and they are not counted toward the total number of positions in the announcement.

Duration

The duration for obtaining the doctoral degree is at least three (3) full calendar years from the date of appointment of the three-member advisory committee. The maximum time allowed for the completion of the PhD thesis is six (6) full calendar years from the date of appointment of the three-member advisory committee. In special cases, a PhD candidate may request an extension of up to one (1) full calendar year for completing their thesis by submitting a request to the Department’s Assembly.

Obligations of PhD Candidates

Each PhD candidate is required to:

a) Renew their registration at the beginning of each academic year by submitting a request to the Department’s Secretariat, specifically in October. If a PhD candidate does not renew their registration for two consecutive academic years, they will be removed from the Department’s Doctoral Registry.

b) Submit a detailed written report annually to the three-member advisory committee regarding the progress of their doctoral thesis. The three-member advisory committee, upon receiving the detailed report from the candidate, submits an annual progress report to the Department. Both the candidate’s detailed report and the annual progress report from the advisory committee are filed in the candidate’s personal file.

c) Present their progress publicly in the form of a seminar once a year on a date set by the Department’s General Assembly, which is the same for all PhD candidates of the Department. PhD candidates are required to give a public oral presentation if one (1) year has passed since the formation of the three-member advisory committee.

d) Attend seminars organized by the Department.

e) Contribute to supplementary teaching activities.

If a PhD candidate fails to meet these obligations, the Department’s General Assembly, following a recommendation from the three-member advisory committee, has the right to first issue a written warning to the candidate. If the candidate continues to neglect their obligations, and following a new recommendation from the advisory committee to the General Assembly, they may be removed from the Department’s doctoral candidate registry.
